FINDING CALM WITHIN THE NOISE
Sometimes it’s hard to find any serenity when living in a crowded environment. This is the situation I currently find myself in at the Bayelsa NYSC orientation camp. From the early morning drills to the lecture gatherings, to the endless queues and constant arguments in the hostel, it’s really tough to find any peace of mind within all the noise.
Personally, finding calm within all this chaos has been tough, but as humans, we’re equipped with the skills to be adaptable to any situation. I sometimes concentrate on a particular object or sound and let everything else fade away. This doesn’t always work, but when it does, it enables me focus on my thoughts, it takes away the anxiety of being in a crowded space and it lets me appreciate the beauty of nature around me.
A few beautiful things I’ve noticed here in Bayelsa are the insects on the grass that glow in the dark, they’re like fireflies that don’t fly. The early morning sky is also quite beautiful here; the way the clouds align to form a certain shape, the rays of the sun seeping through the clouds and the clear blue color of the sky on certain days.
These are some things that have helped me fade in to oblivion within all the chaos, I enjoy conversing with people sometimes but when one is constantly surrounded by a flurry of opinions or voices, it’s sometimes hard to have original thoughts, peace of mind, or any sort of calm.
Finding calm in my personal experience comes from within, being able to focus on one thing in a clustered environment. I’ve also noticed people using headphones to block away all the noise. Whatever works, it’s always important to seek some calm within all the noise.
